IRS Introduces Expanded Chatbot Technology to Assist Taxpayers with Underreporting Notices, IR-2023-78

The Service has introduced an expanded chatbot to promptly address inquiries of taxpayers receiving notices about possible underreporting of taxes. The new chatbot feature will assist taxpayers receiving CP2000 , CP2501 and CP3219A notices. This tech expansion is backed by Inflation Reduction Act funding to enhance IRS services for taxpayers.

The chatbot‘s rollout continues to build upon previous IRS achievements with technology, aiding over 13 million taxpayers in resolving tax issues and setting up approximately $151 million in payment agreements since January 2022.

Additionally, the new chatbot helps taxpayers with questions such as:

  • What to do if they received a notice.
  • What to do if they need more time to respond to a notice.
  • How to find out if the IRS received their response.

Finally, the IRS intends to continue additional bot technology features to assist taxpayers with increasingly complex issues in the future. The IRS transformation efforts provided by Inflation Reduction Act Funding are detailed in the https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-unveils-strategic-operating-plan-ambitious-effort-details-a-decade-of-change Strategic Operating Plan released in April.
